21 Days to a Greener You - Day 7

What chemicals are lurking in at your Kitchen and Laundry cupboards

Cleaning comes naturally to some and for others it can be a real chore, but for most of us all we want is a clean house as quickly as possible. Many companies producing detergents, cleaners and sanitisers will tell you that their products will get rid of all the dirt, stains, mould, bacteria and viruses without too much rubbing or soaking. How can they do this? Of course, most have to include a concoction of chemicals to ensure stains and germs are removed quickly, but what are these chemicals and what are they are doing to you, your family and your home?

Many detergents and sanitisers contain toxins and pollutants that can affect our skin and the waterways. Your task today is look in your cupboards and switch to eco-friendly detergents and stain removers. Many of the eco-friendly detergents on the market today will remove stubborn ground in-dirt without using harsh chemicals and the environmental friendly solutions allow you to recycle the laundry water on your garden.

I know some people who love bleach and use it to wash down every surface in their home. What they don’t realise is that bleach whitens or makes the surfaces look clean, but harmful bacteria and mould can still remain, especially if not used correctly. Not only can the germs reappear very quickly, but it leaves a toxic residue (chlorine gas behind) and to add to the mess you are dumping chemicals into your water waste, which is bad for our waterways.

It is easier than ever to rethink how you wash your clothes by using non-chlorine bleach: Oxygen bleach is an excellent cleaner at removing organic stains on clothes or around the house. 100% Sodium Percarbonate has effective formula that is gentle on you, your family and the environment.

Some of the most natural cleaners can be found in your pantry – sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), vinegar and lemon juice. Have a look at some of the ways you can use them in our other blog posts:
