21 Days to a Greener You - Day 2
Make a meal plan and grocery list
If you are custom to dropping into the shops after work or after the school run, then deciding what to cook, you probably find you buy more then you need and you tend to buy things that can be cooked quickly – processed food. Not good for your health or your bank balance or the earth.
Plan your meals for a week and do a weekly shop. You will be amazed at how much you save, but how organised your days will be. With some thought you will buy healthier and more natural food. Where possible buy organic and Fairtrade. The impact of the chemicals (pesticides and herbicides) on the environment is reduced when you buy these certified foods. Also, it means you care for those workers who prepare the food.
Then cook from scratch. Not only is processed food not very good for you, but it has a huge impact on the environment.
If you are game for more:
Have at least one meatless meal per week. The environmental effects of meat production are huge and very wasteful. If everyone reduced the amount of meat they consume per week, it will have a huge impact on the effects of meat production on the land, the atmosphere and the waste build up.
Buy local. Shop at local farmer’s market, your local butcher and green grocer. You will be supporting your local community, lowering your carbon footprint, as well as that of the food you buy as it is sold locally.
Need some extra help:
Here is a link to both a meal planner and a grocer list to help you out.
How did you go with yesterday's task.
Reminder: Take your timer into the bathroom and only have 4 minute showers. Practice this each day and it will become easier.
