Be Tech Savvy and not a Gadget dumpster

With the growing number of gadgets in every household, one must wonder what happens to them when they don’t work anymore or they become obsolete. With the fast pace of innovation, we all want the latest and the best, so what is done with the redundant models? Or have you even thought about it?

I love technology and seeing the advancements we have made, but in recent years I have realised the waste that has comes with gathering new gadgets. So, I have looked at ways to make having gadgets eco-friendlier.

Recycling

There are a few recycling programs you should take advantage of. Many computer companies such as Dell, HP, Apple, Samsung and Canon will take your old laptop, computer or printers and recycle them. Depending on your brand, just enquire if they have a recycling program. Most of these companies can reuse many parts of these devices.

Trade in your mobile phones

If you are thinking about upgrading your phone, talk to your service provider and see what trade in deals they offer.

Help Primate conservation

Zoos Victoria is asking Australians to become smarter phone users. They are running a campaign called “They're Calling on You”, which is asking people to donate their old mobile phones to raise much needed funds for primate conservation. By donating your mobile phone, you will be reducing the demand for conflict minerals, such as coltan, a dull metallic ore found in major quantities in the eastern areas of Congo. As the price of coltan has skyrocketed, smuggling, exploitation and mass clearing of forests to mine for the ore has occurred. Consequently, some miners and rebels hunt the parks' endangered elephants and gorillas for food. Start looking for those old mobiles and donate to the Zoos.

Sell online

Many platforms like eBay, Gumtree ad Craigslist sell your old mobiles. Some people prefer older models, while some are tech savvy and plan to take them apart to make something else. Better than going to landfill.

As you can see there is no need to be throwing your old gadgets away. They can always find a second life. Just remember to wipe all your personal details before handing over any gadget to someone else.
