A few people have asked me some questions about inactivated brewers yeast. They are not really sure what to do with it and how it can help their health. So I thought I should explain why you should use it and how it can be used.

 

 

 

Brewer’s yeast is a by-product of the beer industry, absorbing vitamins and nutrients from the other ingredients involved in the brewing process. This means it is a good source of protein and B complex vitamins. These vitamins help break down carbohydrates, fats and proteins which provide the body with energy.

 

Brewer's yeast is a rich source of chromium. Scientists think it may help treat high blood sugar by lowering blood sugar levels, as well improving glucose tolerance and reducing the amount of insulin needed. It is reported that brewer’s yeast naturally increases milk supply in breastfeeding mothers, as well as help conditions such as eczema and acne. Maintains healthy weight levels, while regulating blood sugar

 

How to use:

 

Brewer’s yeast has a bitter taste. It has a yeasty, almost cheesy flavour. It can be used in:

  • Bread and cake baking (not as a raising agent).

  • Use like a parmesan cheese and faux cheese.

  • Sprinkle a moderate amount of powdered brewer’s yeast on popcorn to make your own cheese-flavoured variety of this snack.

  • Salad dressings and toppings on pasta dishes.

  • Add a teaspoon or two into your own home-made broth/soup.

  • Add to juice, fruit or vegetables to add flavour.

It is often advised that brewer’s yeast be added at the end or after the food is cooked so that the heat doesn’t wipe out the B vitamins.

 

It cannot be used for beer making as the yeast is inactivated.
